I think this refusal you point out is part of the awareness problem. When my wife and doctor wanted me to go in for a sleep study, they were both fairly certain I had a sleep apnea problem. Although I believed that I probably had a sleep apnea problem, and although I vaguely knew that sleep apnea posed health risks, I was still very reluctant to go into the sleep lab. Somehow my not-so-clear brain still couldn't correlate the health risks with the handful of OSA side effects I was suffering at the time. I think had I discovered very early on, with its wealth of factual information and personal anecdotes, I never would have been so reluctant to get a sleep test. I kind of think that I was aware of my sleep problem back then, but not fully aware of all the personal ramifications of that problem.
